If we believe in Jesus, we will not give unqualified or primary allegiance to any other king. We will not look to Caesar to save us, nor to the force of his armies. We will not make friends with Mammon, counting on wealth for happiness and security. We will not look to the “kings of the Gentiles” and to those who lord it over others in business, in politics or in social life for models of greatness and success. We will look instead to trusting little children and to those who live to serve. In response to all the enticements and intimidation of this world we will answer, “I cannot live by bread alone;” my life is nourished by words that come from the mouth of God. “I will not put the Lord, my God, to the test. I will worship the Lord alone, and him only will I serve.”

God is pleased with nothing but love.
One act of pure love is more precious in the eyes of God
and of the soul, and more profitable to the Church,
than all the good works together,
though it may seem as nothing.”
– St. John of the Cross
