Jesus in the Gospels teaches by word and deed the rejection of violence and the love of enemies. Anything that has the name “Christian Tradition” has to be consistent with the Gospels or else it is simply activity that occurred in the past that was done by people who called themselves Christians. This is why the entire Church for three hundred years never even tries to write a sentence saying or suggesting that violence and war and hatred of enemies were activities in which it could be engaged.
The official standard the Church employs to discern and determine if something is and can be called a Church Tradition is quod ubique quod semper, quod ab omnibus creditum est. “What has been believed everywhere, always and by all.”
It would be beyond all possible reasonableness to believe and maintain that when justifications of violence began entering the Church through various bishops and their acceptance of Stoic just war theories in the Fourth Century that it was consistent with “What has been believed everywhere, always and by all,” for the prior three hundred years. This is why the Church can never call any justification of war a Church Tradition or Church Doctrine. Yet, in The Catechism the Catholic Church a clever but dishonest author writes of the just war “doctrine” with quotation marks around it. This tells the average Catholic that the just war theory is a doctrine that they can hang their moral hat on when called by a government to kill for it, without the Church actually having to do what it cannot do by its own standards for discerning and determining authentic Tradition and Doctrine from false Tradition and Doctrine.
Only God knows how many human beings, Catholic and non-Catholic, have been killed and maimed by the institutional Church over the centuries by placing the generalized belief in the minds of Catholic boys and girls that just war theory is a Tradition or Doctrine of the Catholic Church.
It is Jesus’ teaching in the Gospels that, by His words and deeds, teaches the non-resistance of the Suffering Servant, love of enemies, and absolute rejection of violence; this is the Sacred Holy Tradition of the Church and the infallible teaching of God Incarnate in the Gospels.
