Who is served by intentionally and systematically hiding the historical fact of how for 300 years Christians struggled, suffered and died to be faithful to the Jesus of Nonviolent Love of all, including lethal enemies, and to be faithful to the Sacred Tradition passed on to them that embodied and witnessed to that Gospel Truth of Nonviolent Love of all as the Way of Jesus and the Way Jesus taught His Apostle to follow and to teach? Does such censorship serve God’s redemptive plan for all in Jesus, or does it serve the U.S. Military’s recruitment plans?
In my own case I was made well aware of the Christian martyrs of the persecutions of the first three centuries who died for their Catholic faith at the hands of the Roman government and its henchmen soldiers. But, never once in twenty-three years of Catholic education was it presented as related to faithfully following Jesus’ teaching of totally rejecting violence and enmity as He did, to loving their enemies and offering no violent defense as He did. I am sure that this intentional institutional Church total blackout of what is written on the scroll above is the case for just about all mainline Christians Churches, Catholics or otherwise. Why? Whose interests does it serve for Catholics and Christians to be kept systematically in a chronic state of oblivious about the historical fact stated on the scroll?
In the novel,1984, it is explained that “He who controls the present controls the past and he who controls the past controls the future.” As people are taught how life has been lived in the past, so they will think it must be lived in the present and in the future. But, suppose life was not always lived this way in the past but was only thought to always be live this way because the historical record was bowdlerized.
The American Catholic Bishop, individually and collectively, giving carte blanche moral approval for American Catholics to go into U.S. military weapons’ training to learn how to maim and kill human beings in various ways and then going to maim and kill others when told to by a military “superior,” is an episcopal act that depends entirely on a nurtured, cultivated, reinforced ignorance on a grand scale, or else, in 2026, it is by each Bishop who gives his approval and support to this, pure and simply living in mauvaise foi.
