How can I cause you pain? Let me count the ways.
Every square centimeter of a human being’s skin is packed with roughly 200 pain receptors (nociceptors). In fact, these free nerve endings outnumber all other sensory receptors, e.g., 6 receptors for cold, and 1 for warmth. Any human being can cause any other human being great pain with little effort.
The mass slaughter and maiming of human beings is universally blandly referred to as war. However, at the second to second micro level where war actually takes place, war is ultimately individual human beings imposing and enduring pain.
Militaries are groupings of people who have been taught how to cause pain and are committed if ordered to causing pain to other human beings. They are supplied with the instruments to do just that. From generals to private military personnel are paid professional pain-makers.
So also, is that the case with the military-industrial-complex and those who financially profit from being part of it. Lockheed Martin received $75.7 billion dollars last year from the government to build pain-making technology for use by the economic and political elites who control the government and its military operations. A part of that funding was for research on how to construct better pain-making technology. General Dynamic, RTX, both received $35 billion to research, create and produce more advanced high tech pain-making gimmicks.
Jesus’ teaching in the Gospels is that His disciples are to relieve pain, not impose it. In fact, whether a person relieves or refuses to relieve pain, Jesus says, is the standard of eternal judgment at the end of this age (Mt 25:35-40). One cannot get much clearer than that in communicating the importance that relieving pain has in a Christian life. In light of this explicitly stated Gospel truth of God, how can a Pope or a Bishop approve and justify a Christian joining an organization committed to pain-making of every type imaginable? Over the centuries, Popes and Bishops have come up with many reasons that they and their fellow Catholics can impose pain on others. Many of which are quite rational. None of which can be found in the teaching of Jesus in the Gospels.
