The person who is to be the Messiah and the Savior of the world is God’s choice, not ours. The Messiah and Savior Jesus who actually comes differes from the Messiah-Savior everyone expected in just this: that “though he was harshly treated, he submitted and opened not his mouth; like a lamb led to the slaughter or a sheep before the shearers, he was silent and opened not his mouth” (Isaiah 52:13-53:12, Hymn of the Suffering Servant). Can we, do we, accept Jesus as Messiah and Savior of all humanity under these terms (Isaiah 52:13-53:12)?

God is pleased with nothing but love.
One act of pure love is more precious in the eyes of God
and of the soul, and more profitable to the Church,
than all the good works together,
though it may seem as nothing.”
– St. John of the Cross
