You can safely assume that you have created God in your own image and likeness when it turns out that God approves killing all the same people that your leaders and you want to kill. Historically, institutional just war Christianity grants its people the peace of conscience of knowing that God gives the thumbs-up to destroying those whom they wish to destroy.

No Catholic hierarchy of any nation has ever formally declared the war in which that nation is presently engaged as being unjust according to the standards of Catholic just war theory, thereby making it morally impermissible for any Catholic to participate in it because it would be unjustified killing, that is, it would be the grave evil (mortal sin) of murder. The same can be said for most of the other Christian Churches, Orthodox, Protestant and Evangelical.
