The Christmas carol, O Little Town of Bethlehem, includes a verse that, for decades, has made me pause—even outside the Christmas season—to ponder its ineffable meaning and astonishing implications:
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting Light;
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight.
