FAST FOOD AD 2026, Thirty-Second Helping

I don’t know of a more irreligious attitude, one more utterly bankrupt of any human content, than one which permits children to be destroyed in the womb in war by political or economic calculation.

-Daniel Berrigan, S.J

Is the daily mass murder of children in the womb in modern industrial, high tech war an issue that is close to the hearts or in the front of the minds of U.S. Catholic bishops, priests, right-to-life advocates or laity? Or, is it so far removed from the hearts and minds of U.S. Catholic bishops, priests, right-to-life advocates or laity that it can be accurately classified as a non-thought and non-issue.

In the Catholic Church murder is murder whether it takes place outside the womb or inside the womb. Indifference, to responding to relievable human suffering when one has an ability to respond and hence a moral-response-ability to respond, carries with it, according to Jesus, Matthew 25: 31-46, abhorrent consequences. The Catholic Church has an extraordinary cache of spiritual and physical means by which it could respond to this century-long, ever- spreading plague of the military-industrial-corporate mass murder of innocent human beings in the womb by war. To date its leaders, Bishops, have intentionally chosen not to employ them.  Why?

I have perused the local weekly Catholic diocesan paper for decades and I have never seen a word on the abortion and war issue. I am certain this is a Church policy that is not limited to my geographic area. Abortion by war is to be kept out of ordinary Catholic consciousness and thereby ceases to be a moral issue with which the Bishops or any Catholic has to deal.

Bullfeathers!

Where it is people from your Catholic community who are the agents for the killing of children in the womb in war, a Bishop, who is the Vicar of Christ in his diocese and is explicitly commissioned by Jesus Himself to teach the Baptized “to obey all that I have commanded you,” and who has the penultimate moral authority to direct his Catholic people on how to be sheep rather than goats, cannot stand by as if something gravely evil in which his Catholic people are involved is not happening, when it is happening.

In my naive opinion, I believe that it is morally mandatory for the U.S. Bishops to spend the entire time at one of their semi-annual gathering discerning what the U.S. Catholic Church is going to do in the face of the murderous plague of men and women, boys and girls, in the military killing innocent children by the millions in the womb and outside the womb as members of industrial killing operations in modern war.

The legal legitimacy of baby killing in the womb and outside the womb today is taken-for-granted as an ordinary part of the secular morality governing industrial war.  There are not thousands of people in the streets today chanting about Donald Trump and the U.S. military what was being chanted about Lyndon Johnson and the U.S. military during the Vietnam War: “Hey, hey, LBJ, how many babies did you kill today.” This is not because there has been less baby killing in the womb and outside the womb by the United States and its military since Vietnam. It is because U.S. citizens, Catholics among them, have been acculturated, brainwashed, to accept baby killing as an acceptable means for conducting war. All the evidence indicates that this is to be the case for the indefinite future. I am positive that robot-soldiers and AI will be programmed accordingly. So, by entering the U.S. military now a person will automatically enter an environment that takes the necessity and acceptability of killing innocent children in the womb or outside as part of what the military does and has to do in modern war.

So, I suppose the only choice that Catholic just-war bishops and other just war Catholics have is to find some spiritual, psychological, emotional, theological trick to pretend the problem does not exist, as is the case presently, or else face the truth that there is no possible manner by which a Catholic’s participation in war can be morally justified.

I would offer that if the U.S. Catholic Bishops made the latter the stance of the entire Catholic Church in the U.S. withdrawing forever by an ex cathedra statement Catholics from having anything to do with the possibility of killing babies as a military duty, instead of letting each solitary Catholic witness who objected to killing babies in war be individually  pick-off, as Franz Jagerstatter was, by the government one at a time, this could be a significant efficacious step in morally responding to the present reality of the indiscriminate slaughter of children in the womb and outside the womb in modern day war. And, since conduct in dire and dreadful moral matters is substantially more convincing than mere words, the, “No,” to baby killing in the womb or outside the womb by the Catholic Church would be heard and felt across the world as few other Church moral declarations have ever been heard and felt.

Then again, maybe awareness of the astronomical numbers of innocent children in the womb being slaughtered in war by contemporary weaponry, when viewed along with all the other grave evils in which a person must participate in the military and in war, will finally persuade Catholics and other Christians that the honest follower of Jesus as Lord, God, and Savior, and as the Way, the Truth, and the Life, has no place in the military or in war.”

About Us

The full embracing of Gospel Nonviolence calls for a radical alteration in thought patterns, verbal patterns, behavioral patterns, and emotional patterns. That is, it requires a completely different reality orientation and self-understanding.
