Idolatry is the sin not of the primitive and superstitious, but of the cultured and sophisticated. The essence of idolatry is to direct one’s life towards some earthly value and to look to this value for the fulfillment one seeks in life.
This makes us view patriotism in a whole new light. Because our “citizenship is in heaven” we are freed from giving our primary allegiance to any country on earth. The Christian’s first allegiance is to Jesus Christ and to his kingdom of universal peace established by the shedding of no blood but his own.
