The Church is expressly commissioned by Jesus to teach the Baptized to obey the morality that Jesus has commanded in the Gospels (Mt 28: 19-20). Jesus’ Gospel morality is the moral revolution of Christlike love. The New Testament reduces all morality to the commandment of love, “love as Jesus loves.” This implies no commission to teach philosophical morality, although the application in the moral moment of Christlike love is formed by the use of reason. But, the place of reason in the Chrisitan life is to figure out how to honestly and properly implement Jesus’ teaching, not how to modify them, ignore them, dismiss them or turn them on their head so that they mean what we know from the rest of the writings in the Gospels they could never mean.
In Christian morality, reason must operate within the morality of “loving as Jesus loves,” not outside it. If Church authorities or an individual Christian solves a moral problem by philosophical reasoning alone, rather than by the application of Jesus’ teaching of love in the model of Himself, its conclusion has no more strength than the quality of its philosophical reasoning. Christian Natural Law moral norms and reasoning therefore do not and cannot exist independent of Jesus’ “New Commandment,” “love one another as I have loved you.” The reason this is spiritually and theologically true is that Jesus, the “Word (‘logos’) of God made flesh,” created and communicated both to humanity, and He does not command as the will of God contradictory moral choices, e.g., “love your enemy as I loved My enemies,” and “hate and kill your enemy as I never hated and killed My enemies.”
In the beginning was the Word (‘logos’), the Word was with God and the Word was God. Through Him all that was created was created and without Him nothing would have been created. And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.” Natural Law and Jesus’ totally “New Commandment,” indeed all the moral teachings of Jesus in the Gospels, must exist in one accord without contradiction of the slightest sort because God is essentially simple and is “logos.”
