So, for each of us the practical moral question is this: Whom will I put before my children, grandchildren, godchildren, nephews, nieces, students, and neighbors as a model to desire to emulate and imitate? Who should I encourage them to become like? Samson? Saul? David? Solomon? Morehead? Jesus? To nurture an innocent child into desiring to be Samson-like or David-like and to do it on the basis that he or she is thus being nurtured into being a follower of Jesus is not only deception in the extreme, it is unparalleled, life-destroying, radical child abuse. “Whoever may cause to stumble one of these little ones who are believing in me, it is better for him that a heavy millstone may be hung upon his neck and that he may drown in the depth of the sea” (Mt 18:6).
