FAST FOOD: Twenty-Third Helping
There is no greater obstacle to the light and guidance which come from God than attachment to the pleasures, wealth, prestige and power of this world. In the measure that anyone, therefore—clergy or laity; bishop or business executive; conservative or liberal; old or young; priest, pope or parent—is living the lifestyle of the rich and respected, and is comfortable with the conventions of the culture, that Christian’s personal interpretation of the Gospel must be looked upon with some suspicion. This is true even of the popes when what they are teaching is their personal, non-infallible opinion. God made this point emphatically in Matthew’s Gospel by showing us Peter, the “rock” of the Church, speaking by the inspiration of God in one paragraph and in the next as the unwitting spokesman of Satan. Above all we must not complacently accept common practices in our culture as moral just because Church leaders fail to challenge them.
