The name “Jesus” means “God saves.” But Jesus’ way of saving the world was so different from what his people expected, that before he could tell his disciples what kind of Messiah he was going to be, they had to accept him absolutely, unconditionally and irrevocably, as the Savior God had sent. Jesus’ mission is to save the world by enduring evil with love. To be associated with him we must accept to ‘carry our cross’—that is, accept whatever is done to us, whatever falls on our shoulders as a result of the sin and ignorance and blindness of this world—and love back.

God is pleased with nothing but love.
One act of pure love is more precious in the eyes of God
and of the soul, and more profitable to the Church,
than all the good works together,
though it may seem as nothing.”
– St. John of the Cross
