It is not human to give up reliance on power and prestige, or even to believe that we ought to. To do this, Jesus tells we need to die to self, we need to die to the influence of “flesh and blood,” that is, be freed from the radical conditioning of our culture, including the conditioning to which we have been subjected by our Christian culture, which for centuries has proposed to us a model of the Christian lifestyle that takes wealth, power, prestige and the defense of them by war for granted.

God is pleased with nothing but love.
One act of pure love is more precious in the eyes of God
and of the soul, and more profitable to the Church,
than all the good works together,
though it may seem as nothing.”
– St. John of the Cross
